The US National Parks
Where do I start? I first discovered the NPS about 20 years ago, during a road trip with my new boyfriend. Traveling with someone is an excellent way to know if you’re made for each other ;) Today, this same guy is my husband, and we are parents to two boys. We’ve visited over 20+ National Parks. This collection is just the beginning, more to come!
The history behind the birth of the national park service (NPS)—a federal agency within the Department of the Interior— is a uniquely American idea rooted in democracy, philosophy, and art. You can read more about it here and here. But maybe you’ve heard or read a quote from John Muir? John Muir (1838-1914), a naturalist, lobbied for wilderness preservation and contributed to the creation of more national parks. He’s also known as the “Father of the National Parks.” The National Park Service today oversees 417 parks and monuments covering more than 84 million acres and is a great way to experience the Great American Outdoors and learn about land’s history.
